You must begin working on this important assignment this week. To get started, you will select a theme/topic from the suggested list found within the Research Project instructions found in Week 5. Throughout Chapters 1-5, you have learned about various hardware components and software systems and applications. These include multi-core processors, flash memory, optical processors, netbooks, BlackBerry, iPhone, iPod touch, Microsoft Surface, open source Linux, Ubuntu, virtualization, Yapta intelligent agents, and augmented reality. In addition, many new systems and applications are (or will be) arriving to the market such as iPad and many other tablets, Android mobile devices, Project Natal controller, Chrome OS, Google Translate, etc.

Which input/output devices will you be using in the next one to three years as "computing" devices?
Which features/components/form factors will be prominent? Why?
Which features/components/form factors will be important to you? Why?
Which applications will you be using on these devices?

How may these devices change your life in terms of benefits and risks

Do you think the law should allow these kinds of creative expressions? Why?

Is Creative Commons good for copyright holders and market competition? Why? Or not?

INF 103 Week 3 Discussion 1 Ubiquitous Computing and Your Privacy

MySpace, Facebook, email, and collaborative sites for both work and leisure are a norm on the net these days. But did you know all of the content you post on many of these sites immediately become partially owned by the sites themselves? And, taking items away by deleting them never really gets rid of them. In fact, in Groundswell by Bernoff and Li, they state that trying to take something off the Internet that you have posted is like trying to remove pee from a pool. Scott McNealy, founder of Sun Microsystems, perhaps sums it up best, "You have zero privacy anyway. Get over it."

Keep in mind that technology is everywhere all the time (ubiquitous) because of the onset of smartphones, and other mobile devices. You have a 21st century phenomenon. But, is what Scott McNealy said true? Cite and explain examples that support and argue against this statement.

I suppose it means Erik Qualman, the author of Socialnomics, was correct when he said, “It's a people driven economy stupid” (2009).  Welcome to the social web!  Review the videoSocial Media Revolution. How are we to know information is accurate, or safe, or that all these content created are going somewhere meaningful? 

Based on your readings in the textbook, your personal experiences, as well as what you know about the evolving Internet, explain how social media/web is changing or has changed the ways you, your family, and colleagues find information. Also, how has social media/web changed the ways you interact in your personal and professional life as well as within academic spheres? What functionalities do you think will be invented in the future? 

Make sure you support your argument with facts, figures, and intelligent analysis. Also, consider any opposing arguments.

INF 103 Week 5 Discussion 1 Artificial Intelligence, Singularity, and Google

Alan Turing said, "The extent to which we regard something as behaving in an intelligent manner is determined as much by our own state of mind and training as by the properties of the object under consideration."  Given the developments in cloud computing, automatic speech recognition, instantaneous optical recognition, and real-time translation of languages in mobile devices, are we now closer to achieving artificial intelligence and singularity?  Why?  Will the humanity be better off with or without the passing of singularity?  Which benefits will we enjoy?  Will we ever have to be worried about a system like HAL, the malevolent computer in the movie "2001"?  Explore ethical implications that will be realized. 

INF 103 Week 5 Discussion 2 Wordle of Your Research Paper

You will create a Wordle word visualization cloud from your research paper and share it with the class.

Review Tom Barrett'sForty-Five Interesting Ways* to Use Wordle in the Classroom.
In order to create a PDF of your Wordle cloud later, install a free PDF printer software fromCutePDF.
Click on "Free Download" link and download the file and run the installation.
During installation, follow the directions but do NOT choose Ask Toolbar installation by unclicking all the options for Ask Toolbar (start with the last check option in that dialog box).  
After the install, follow the instructions to install "Free Converter" software.
Then, you can find CutePDF under a list of your printers.
Go toWordleand view the gallery.
Click on "Create" link and then copy and paste your whole research paper into "Paste in a bunch of text" textbox (you may remove your name from the text) and click on the "Go" button. The Wordle word visualization cloud of your research paper will appear.
Try clicking on the "Randomize" button several times to see different versions of your word cloud.
Try adjusting options under "Font,” "Layout,” and "Color" in the menu bar of Wordle to further fine-tune your Research Paper word cloud.  
In order to create a PDF document of your Wordle word cloud when you are satisfied with the result,
Click on the "Print" button,
Choose "CutePDF Writer" from the list of printers
Click on "Properties" to define color and page orientation
Click "OK"
Choose where you will like to save the PDF and give a filename using convention: first initial last initial Wordle (for example for Jane Smith, jsWordle.pdf) 
NOTE: On Mac OS X, CutePDF is not necessary as Mac offers a way to print PDF files. Review instructions atMac OS X 10.4 Help: Saving a document as a PDF file.
Optional:  If you are willing to share your creation with the public (hopefully, you would like others to see your work), share it in the public gallery by clicking on the "Save to public gallery…" button and giving it a title and username.  Please note that there is no way to delete it after you publicly share it, so do not include any personal information in your text or Wordle.
Submit your PDF of Wordle word cloud to the discussion board as an attachment in your post.

After reading Chapters 6-7 and then critically thinking and reflecting on the information, please select three of the questions below to answer. Your responses should be a minimum of a paragraph (125-175 words) per question, be grammatically correct, and demonstrate through intelligent use of quotes, facts, and figures that you have learned from the assigned chapters.

  • Searching for information on Google is like trying to find a needle in a haystack. Is that true? Was the library of the 19th century more efficient? Explain.
  • How is searching in a specific database, such as Ashford’s library, different from searching in Bing, Google, or Yahoo?
  • The information age might very well go down as one of the most influential movements of the last century. The term “revolution” refers to a drastic change. In what ways in this information age so drastically different? Is it all good?
  • Propriety software and open source applications are anything but similar. What are the pros and cons of buying Microsoft Office (proprietary) versus downloading and using Open Office (open) for free?
  • Culture is a major facet of any organization. Given this, what role does the culture at Google play in its continual innovative solutions and entrepreneurial applications?
  • The web 2.0 is not a new Internet. Is it the new name given to an emerging trend – participation?  Instead of simply consuming information people are contributing and as a result, connecting to others in the process. If you had to make an educated guess, what might the web 3.0 be like? Why?
  • Social networks allow people to connect for a variety of reasons in a digital environment.  You might join LinkedIn to meet business contacts, MySpace to find a band member, or Facebook to see pictures of old friends and meet new ones. Whatever environment you decide to be a part of, posting information about you has become an issue of concern. What are those concerns? I mean what is the big deal about privacy?
  • The founder of Wikipedia has a noble mission – to share all the world’s information with everyone everywhere, anytime.  In what ways has this mission been successful? In what ways has it not been successful?
  • Is email dead for teenagers? Explain.
  • Given the trends of ubiquitous computing and media rich environments, how might communication at work evolve in the next five years?

All sources used must be properly cited, and the paper must be formatted according the APA (6th edition) style.
