Amenorrhea is the term used to describe the lack of a menstrual period for 90 days. not having menstrual periods can mean that your ovaries have stopped producing normal amounts of estrogen and can have important effects on overall health. Hormonal problems, such as those caused by polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) or serious problems with the reproductive organs, may be involved. There are two types of amenorrhea, primary and secondary.Primary amenorrhea is recognized as no menses by the age of 14 and no secondary sexual features, or no menses by the age of 16 with secondary sexual characteristics. Secondary amenorrhea is the term used to describe a woman who has started menstruating, but ceases to have a period for 3-6 months without the presence of pregnancy, breastfeeding, or menopause (Tharpe, Farley, & Jordan, 2013).
